Novartis BioCamp

Don Chen has been with Novartis Pharma since 1997, and is currently Head of HR Pharma in Taiwan. In 2003, Don was instrumental in the creation of what is now known as Novartis BioCamp, a program that offers graduate students in science and business an intimate look inside the world of biotechnology. Through interaction with a faculty of seasoned managers, accomplished researchers, and other experts, Novartis has introduced nearly 500 top students to the biotech industry and entrepreneurship. Since its launch six years ago, global BioCamp seminars have been held in Singapore (2006), Tokyo (2007), Hong Kong (2008) and Cambridge, Massachusetts (2009), in addition to the many local BioCamps held worldwide.

While the innovative and creative idea for Novartis BioCamp was generated in Asia several years ago, it aligns well with our current priorities given that as a company we are looking for future growth – both in terms of market and talent – in the East.

Don graduated in 1983 from the National Ping-Tung Institute of Agriculture with a diploma in food service. In 2005, he received a master’s degree in human resources from the National Central University in Taiwan. He began his career as a sales representative for Ciba in Taiwan, but started his HR career in earnest in 1997 with Novartis Pharma Taiwan.

Described by his peers as “an extremely enthusiastic colleague, full of positive energy,” Don is a seafood-lover and an avid reader. Don is particularly interested in the teachings of Confucius and makes an effort to apply this philosophy to modern HR practice.

大木俊九郎 1879—1967

號桃江，日本佐賀縣人，明治十二年（1879）生。就讀佐賀中學、熊本高校，1903年畢業於東京帝大文科，先後在愛媛、山梨、福岡、沖繩、廣島等中學任教。1921年渡海來臺，擔任臺中商業學校首席教諭。翌年新竹中學創立，被任為首任校長，蓽路藍縷，慘淡經營，奠立了竹中的基礎。注重德、智、體三育並進，無所偏廢，各門均委由學有專精之教師任之，其本人則專注於訓導工作；體育尤注重劍道和游泳，每寒冬練劍，天色未明時，率學員靜坐養氣，風雨不避。更強調「一視同仁」政策，無論「內地」日人或「島民」臺人，均一體受教，無分軒輊，以收日臺相融和睦之道，這在當年日方歧視臺人之政策下，甚為難能。平生崇拜日將乃木希典，經常以乃木之精神為圭臬。要求學生剛健樸素，尊敬師長，應注意「退後七尺，不踏師影」之禮儀，訓導甚嚴。其人頗讀詩書，甚為博學，而有雄辯之才，善吟和歌，喜書畫、音樂，而尤嗜劍道，造詣亦深。地方每有藝文活動，常被聘為評審、指導，甚負時譽。1932年離臺返日。繼任佐賀圖書館館長。常以「葉隱」為筆名發表作品。1964年嘗應校友之邀重返新竹，備受禮敬。1967年卒，年八十九。（張子文）

村人甲的日本友人大木美枝子原來是大木俊九郎的曾孫女

大木畢業於日本東京大學文學士，到任後即倡言「內台一致」，內就是內地
（日本國），台就是台灣，並沒有把台灣當作殖民地的心態。從日據時代圖書館留下來
許多重要的各種日本文庫，可以了解大木用心經營學校的用心。新竹高中
最引以為榮的文化｜游泳課和越野賽跑，其實在大木校長時代就已成蔚為風氣。

張德南表示，二位校長的共同點是公正嚴明，行事風格都是坦蕩蕩可見諸於人。他們
「身教」的例子，今天列為市定古蹟的辛志平公館，正確的名稱應該是新竹中學校長公
館，大木居住在這裡時，灑掃庭園都自己動手。日據時代的竹中校友，都記得大木每天
會寫一句訓勉的話，和學生相互砥礪。

　值得一提的是，大木校長會離開新竹中學校，原因是他的醫生兒子和護士談戀愛，他
覺得自己教出來的兒子不該在職場如此，因而認為不再有資格擔任新竹中學校校長而去
職。

Then friends moved to Dr. Hubert Chen's new land in Chu Keng, Heng Shan. In 3 years, he will built his new hiking lodge and welcome friends from the island and abroad to stay and enjoy the unique Hakka life in Heng Shan Village.
